Childcare providers say they need extra money to make the Government’s childcare schemes work.

Professionals are meeting today to discuss the two new plans announced in the budget, which they say will increase their administration and salary costs.

The first involves the payment of a means-tested subsidy directly to childcare providers who must be registered with Tusla, while the second will see a subsidy paid to parents.

Chairperson of private early education providers Regina Bushell said: “One of our main problems is getting and retaining qualified staff.

“Unless we can get further investment, we just won’t get the staff to come into the sector, and stay. That’s a major challenge.”
