Today Google has made some very large changes to their search engine. Starting April 21 2015, Google say that they will start to “use a websites ‘mobile-friendliness’ as one of many factors to help rank searches done on mobile devices.” You can read more about the changes here.

The first step to determining if your site is mobile-friendly, is to understand what that term means. Mobile-friendly websites are sites that display optimally on mobile devices. That means that when a user loads your site up on their smartphone, they do not have to pinch and zoom in order to read the contents and to click on links. Instead, a mobile-friendly site is easy to read and easy to use on a smartphone. You can test your websites mobile friendly version here.

I already have a childcare website – What does this mean?

In essence this Google search engine update requires people who already have websites to make sure they are “mobile responsive” or otherwise their position in search results will be lower than before. It’s important to note that this update will impact only mobile searchers and it will give a ranking boost to mobile-friendly websites in Google’s mobile search results only. Searches performed on tablet and desktop devices are not affected.

Check your website on Google’s own mobile friendly website test tool. If your site fails the test ask your web developer about getting your website upgraded to be mobile responsive. Alternatively it may be cheaper and easier to choose a brand new website from one of our easy to choose templates. We have lots of childare based website templates for you to choose from for your upgraded new childcare website.
